چکیده

Models of the interactions between population, economy, and environment often contain nonlinear functional relationships and variables that vary a t different speeds. These properties foster apparent unpredictabilities in system behavior. Using a simple deterministic model of demographic, economic and environmental interactions, we illustrate the usefulness of geometric singular perturbation theory and local bifurcation theory. In particular we show how it is possible to obtain analytic expressions for: (1) the level of emissions above which environmental deterioration begins, (2) the time it takes from reaching the critical level of emissions to the beginning of rapid environmental deterioration, and (3) the level of emissions at the time that rapid deterioration begins. Because our results are analytic, they make the outcomes of demographic, economic, and environmental interactions more predictable, and, therefore, potentially more manageable.

Existence of Innitely Many Connecting Orbits in a Singularly Perturbed Ordinary Dierential Equation

We consider a one-parameter family of two-dimensional ordinary di erential equations with a slow parameter drift. Our equation assumes that when there is no parameter drift, there are two invariant curves consisting of equilibria, one of which is normally hyperbolic and whose stable and unstable manifolds intersect transversely. The slow parameter drift is introduced in a way that it creates tw...

Threshold harvesting policy and delayed ratio-dependent functional response predator-prey model

This paper deals with a delayed ratio-dependent functional response predator-prey model with a threshold harvesting policy. We study the equilibria of the system before and after the threshold. We show that the threshold harvesting can improve the undesirable behavior such as nonexistence of interior equilibria. The global analysis of the model as well as boundedness and permanence properties a...

The Dynamics of Reputations

We study the endogenous dynamics of reputations in a system consisting of firms with long horizons that provide goods or services with varying levels of quality, and large numbers of customers who assign to them reputations on the basis of the quality levels that they experience when interacting with them. We show that for given discounts of the past on the part of the customers, and of effort ...

Mixed equilibria are unstable in games of strategic complements

In games with strict strategic complementarities, properly mixed Nash equilibria— equilibria that are not in pure strategies—are unstable for a broad class of learning dynamics. Journal of Economic Literature Classification Numbers: C72, C73.
